About 1st Grade Literacy

In  first grade, your child will participate in whole group lessons, mini-lessons, Guided Reading, and flexible targeted instruction in literacy. With this approach, every student will receive differentiated instruction focused on his or her reading level and skills.  The DRA2 will be administered several times throughout the year to accurately assess each child’s progress in reading.  Additionally, students will participate in a variety of literacy centers each week to strengthen their skills in reading, writing, and working with words.  For example, reading centers may include activities focusing on sequencing, comprehension, fluency, reading with expression, concepts of print, etc.  Students will also continue working with Writer's Workshop, focusing on the process of writing and strategies that good writers use.  Students will then practice and apply these strategies in their personal writing, emulating, and expanding on ways that other author's have written. Throughout the year, students will be encouraged to utilize our changing Word Walls, which will promote spelling skills, increase sight words, and introduce new vocabulary.
